The Identity Project is a photography project that seeks to explore the labels we choose to identify with when defining our gender and sexuality… and they’ll be setting up shop at the 2024 Translife Community Conference!
As a participant, you’ll have the opportunity to:
Participate in a professional photoshoot, where your identity will be celebrated and honored. You get to choose the final photo used in the project and you get to keep the high res images from the photo session to use on your various social media platforms.
Be a part of our milestone 10-year anniversary project, making history alongside fellow participants. This photo project has traveled the world, making stops in New York, Chicago, Austin, Portland, Taiwan, and Russia.
Share your unique story and perspective on gender and sexuality. The photographer, a queer femme named Sarah Deragon, will get to know you and your story a bit before taking your photo.

Room 23
Transgender People in the 1930s and 40s – A Short Overview of Sonoma County Queer History with Shad Reinstein and Jody Laine
Open to all.
First showing at 12:45 pm.
In a pile of photos taken the 1920s to 1940s we find one that stands out. One portrays two masculine-presenting people. Through the examination of family heirloom address books kept over the course of decades, recorded oral histories and Census data, we identify them as Gerry Orifice, a transgender man and Babe Clapham, a butch woman. Gerry and Babe were friends who lived in NYC in the 1930s.
Here in Sonoma County, we unravel and tell the story of David Warren, a local transgender man who was married to his college roommate. They made national headlines in the 1940s.
This presentation looks into the lives of Gerry Orifice, Babe Clapham, David Warren and the lives of the women who were their partners. Did they know other people like themselves? How did they navigate their work and personal lives?
Shad Reinstein (she, her) is a butch dyke. She is a cis lesbian who has been gender non-conforming since she was a toddler in the 1950s. She came out about a year after Stonewall.
Jody Laine (she, they) is a gender queer non-binary person. They grew up in a conservative religious family and had to fight for their identity their entire life.
Shad and Jody have been partners for over 40 years. They have both been active in progressive politics and in building queer community their entire lives. They are now working as independent researchers specializing in visual presentations of queer history. Their work includes producing and directing several documentary films about the early lesbian feminist movement. They produce OUTwatch, Wine Country’s LGBTQI Film Festival, at the Rialto Cinemas in Sebastopol. This year’s film festival is June 8th.
Their most recent project is to work with Tina Dungan on the LGBTQI History Timeline of Sonoma County, which includes the Russian River. Shad and Jody are also working on a book about a community of lesbians and their gay and transgender friends in rural NYS in the 1930s.

How to Advocate and Foster Community for Your Child Who Is Trans, Nonbinary, or Gender Expansive – And Resources to Support You as a Caregiver with Emelina Minero
Open to all adults.
It can feel overwhelming when your child comes out as trans, nonbinary, or gender expansive. You want them to be safe and happy, but you may not know where to start to support them. When you don’t have anyone in your inner circle to talk with who can relate to you it can feel isolating and terrifying.
This is the exact reason why Amor Para Todos was created. A mom needed resources to support her child who is trans as they entered and continued through the K-12 school system. There were barely any, so she created them. And at times, it felt like ALL she was doing was advocating for her child and always facing pushback or dead ends! If this sounds like where you’re at right now, this workshop can help you.
Emelina Minero from Amor Para Todos, a tía/aunt of a child who is trans (and the sister of the Amor Para Todos founder), will create a safe space where you will receive:
- Resources that can support your child’s K-12 school experience – including how to address accidental outings
- Tips on how to advocate for your child with the outcomes you want
- Year-round resources and support groups for your child (including adult children)
- Support groups and resources for you as a caregiver of a child who is trans, nonbinary, or gender expansive
- A space to share your experience and to hear from other caregivers who “get it”
You have a community among all of us, and you are not alone.
Emelina Minero (she, her, ella) is a freelance community manager, writer, editor, journalist, and social media marketer. She wrote for queer publications for 5 years, wrote about PreK-12 education for 6 years with education nonprofit Edutopia, and did community management and social media engagement for education technology clients like Meta, Remind, and Flinn Scientific.
A proud queer person and animal lover, Emelina is grateful to be supporting the next generation of queer youth as an APT board member, Rohnert Park Pride team member, and Petaluma River Park Community Designer representing the local queer community. Emelina is excited to be a co-lead of APT’s annual Give OUT Day fundraiser event (May 30 at The Block Petaluma) – one of the highlights of her year to be surrounded by an outpouring of love and witness queer people of all ages experience uninhibited joy.

Dr. Breanna Jedrzejewski’s (she, her) lifelong commitment to social justice and dream of becoming a doctor led her to become an integrated plastic surgeon specializing in the full array of gender-affirming procedures. As the daughter of a Polish immigrant and a Mexican-American, and the first in her family to graduate from college, Dr. Jedrzejewski carries a deep compassion for patients who may have experienced trauma or have had challenges accessing the healthcare they need. Her family’s international background inspired her decision to pursue a master’s degree in public health focused on global health as well as her desire to understand more deeply the challenges marginalized communities experience accessing healthcare. Dr. Jedrzejewski was also deeply inspired by the portrait photography she studied as an undergraduate to think about how subjects saw themselves and how artists chose to portray them. These questions have shaped how Dr. Jedrzejewski approaches patient care – closely collaborating with each of her patients to understand how they view themselves and how they wish to be seen in the world.
Dr. Brooke Vezino (she/her) is a full spectrum family doctor in Sebastopol, CA at West County Community Health Centers.
